Introduction

Picture this: you have discovered a time machine that can take you back in time.  A group of students embark upon a quest for knowledge about the ancient world of Greece and the gods, goddesses, heroes, and mythological creatures of the time.  Your mission: To go back and time and report on the whereabouts of people and gods of the time.

The Quest

Three time travelers will work together in a group to report on ONE god, goddess, hero, or mythological creature.  EACH traveler in the group will be responsible for researching information on the assigned character.  Each group will contribute all of the following:

*                  ONE news article

*                  ONE/TWO graphics

*                  ONE advertisement for the character’s gift, skill, ability, etc.

*                  ONE WANTED poster

The articles and advertisements will report the mythological events as if they are happening or have just occurred.

The Process and Resources

*       Students will be grouped by the teacher.  Each group will select a character by drawing a name from a hat.

*       Using the suggested websites, library books, and online encyclopedias (NO WIKIPEDIA) to learn about Ancient Athens and Greek life as well as your character.  This will help you place your character in an authentic setting and create an interesting scenario for your research.  Remember, each time traveler is responsible for researching the assigned character.  Use a variety of sources.

*       You will have access to the Media Center for TWO days to do research.  During this time, AS A GROUP, you need to figure out how you want to present your information.

*       News articles should be approximately 500 words in length.  Creating a story web is a great way to begin writing your article.  Remember not to include anachronisms in your story (i.e. the Ancient Greeks did not have cell phones or credit cards). Access How to Write a News Article to get some great tips about writing your article.

*       Gather data and at least ONE graphic for your story.  Alta Vista is a search engine that allows you to search only for images.  Be sure to CREDIT the source of images you use.    Use the attached sheet to cite the image.

*       The Advertisement needs to be for something the god, etc. can do.   It needs to look like an advertisement you would find in the newspaper.  (Please peruse through the Plain Dealer to see the set up of the ads.  It would need to be a half-full page advertisement for this god, etc.  It MUST have a catchy phrase or slogan for the god, etc.

*       The WANTED Poster should be drawn on poster board.  The information needed for the poster is as follows:

*       The name of the god or mythological creature/person (make it easy to see)

*       A picture of the god/person (choose something appropriate for a poster)

*       A brief description of where the god/person is from and where the god/person can usually be found (in other words, where does the god/person spend his time in the myths?)

*       He or she is the god or goddess of…? He or she is known for…?

*       This god is famous for…?

*       Does this god have a weapon?

*       What other identifying characteristics or interesting facts have you discovered about your god?
