Supplies: Should be brought to class EVERY DAY!  (Repeated failure to come to class prepared will result in a detention)

• 3 Ring Notebook with dividers (5 dividers)

Course Overview:  Students will build on skills mastered in algebra courses, and be introduced to more abstract concepts.  Topics covered include:  the basics in geometry, reasoning and proof, perpendicular and parallel lines, congruent triangles, properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, transformations, similarity, right triangles and trigonometry, circles, area of polygons and circles, and surface area and volume.

 

Course Objectives: Students will be able to…

• Extend and formalize arithmetic ideas to the set of real numbers.

• Make statements, rewrite, and simplify expressions that contain variables.

• Recognize and use functions and relations.

• Continue to improve on problem solving skills.

• Apply geometric formulas and concepts.

• Develop a sense of reasoning and proof.

• Make comparisons with various shapes and designs.

 

Course Expectations:

• Students should be on time to class and seated when the bell rings.
• All necessary materials should be brought to class.
• Students will not use profanity or any language that is vulgar or offensive to others in the room.
• Vandalizing anything in the classroom will not be tolerated.
• Absolutely no eating or drinking in class.
• Students are to be polite and respectful to their peers and the teacher.
• Students are expected to work on math when class time is given.  No other course work is to be done.
• Students will complete assignments on time.  It is expected that all problems be copied and all work shown.  No credit will be given on assignments or exams that do not have work shown.
• All exams and homework must be in PENCIL and written neatly if it is expected to be graded.
• Students should try their best at all times.
• Talking or sharing calculators during exams constitutes cheating and will be punished as such.
• Students should act in a manner befitting their age.

 

Failure to meet any of these expectations will result in a consequence including, but not limited to the following: warnings, phone call home, curricular based writing assignment, discipline referral, removal from class.

 

 

Homework:  Assignments will be given daily and are due the next school day.  These assignments are checked for completeness, not correctness.  It is the student’s responsibility to check their answers in the back of the book, and make sure they understand the material.  Homework guidelines are to be followed in order to receive full credit and the following must be in the top right corner: Name, Date, Assignment (section and number):  All work MUST be shown and in PENCIL   All assignments, quiz/test dates, and helpful links can be found on my website: http://www.NOHSteachers.info/AOstrowski

Absences and Make-Up Work:  The school attendance policy will be followed.  Please refer to your student handbook for rules regarding absences and missed work.  It is YOUR responsibility to ask for missed assignments and to complete missed assignments on time.  Tests and quizzes not made up within 1 week will be scored as a ZERO. Students participating in school field trips should arrange make-up work prior to leaving on the trip.  An unexcused absence on the day of the test/quiz will result in a score of zero.  All homework assignments can be found at my website: http://www.NOHSteachers.info/AOstrowski

 

Grading:  The grading scale that I use is a points scale.  I will weigh each assignment and assessment by determining the number of points it will be worth in the course.  All tests are worth 100 points and be given approximately every 2- 3 weeks. Quizzes range from 10-30 points and will be given weekly.   Homework is given daily and worth 4 points.  All work MUST be shown and in PENCIL on tests, quizzes, homework, and daily assignments in order to receive full credit.  (see attached homework guidelines)  Periodically a homework assignments will be graded, students will be notified when this will occur.  Projects may be assigned throughout the year. 

 

If passing this course is a goal of the student, he/she will be successful if assignments, class work, and projects are completed on time.  Effort is the key ingredient to passing this course. 

 

Cheating:  Cheating will not be tolerated, and will result in a zero for the assignment, test, etc. and may result in a zero in the class.  The Assistant Principal will be notified of the matter and proper consequences will be served.

 

Extra Credit:  Anyone who is interested in extra credit is encouraged to bring in newspaper clippings, magazine articles, articles from the internet, etc. that relate to math in some way.  You must read the article and write a one page summary of the article relating it to mathematics.  In order to receive full credit students should include in the summary their own thoughts and opinions on the article.  The maximum value of the extra credit is 10 points, unless you choose to present the article to the class.  In this case then you may earn up to an additional 10 points for the extra credit project.  Your presentation should include a visual aid of some kind in order to receive the full additional 10 points.  Only 1 article may be turned in per quarter.

 

Hall Pass Policy:  Hall passes will be issued at the discretion of the teacher (limit 3 per quarter).  Students MUST have their planners in order to receive a pass.  NO LOCKER PASSES will be issued, so BRING YOUR SUPPLIES!

 

Tardiness:  Will result in a detention.

 

Handbook/Planner: Students will be expected to write all assignments in it daily.

 

Cell Phone:  Are NOT PERMITTED!  Cell Phones will be confiscated and turned into the main office if they are seen or heard.

 

Purses:  Are to remain under the desk not on your lap or desk, during the entire period.  

 

Extra Help:  Extra help is available before and after school on most days,  Please see teacher for extra help if you feel that you need it.  Appointments are not necessary; however, you may want to check with me before coming in to make sure there is no conflict.
