Course Description- Chemistry

 What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the study of the physical world and the changes that occur when two or more substances react to form new and different products.  It is the study of the structure and properties of all types of matter and includes: the study of matter and energy, atomic structure, measurement, chemical formulas, chemical reactions, chemical bonding, and gases.

Who should take Chemistry?

Chemistry is recommended for students interested in how the physical world is structured at the atomic level and how new and different matter is formed by the changes between substances.  Chemistry is a good class for anyone interested in developing analytical and reasoning skills.  It serves as the third science course requirement and is a college-preparatory course. Students should have competency in basic mathematics and algebraic skills in order to be successful in chemistry.

How is the material presented?

A variety of instructional techniques are utilized in chemistry.  Laboratory and hands-on experiences are the major component of this class.  As this is a college-preparatory course, students will be taught how to learn independently and through group interaction.     Each of the topics covered in Chemistry includes a pre-test of material to be studied, several in-class and homework assignments, both formal and informal laboratory experiments, research projects, multiple quizzes, and a final evaluation at the end of the unit.  Other assignments and enrichment work will be assigned as well.
