Course Description- Honors Chemistry

What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the study of the physical world and the changes that occur when two or more substances react to form new and different products.  It describes the structure and properties of matter.  Topics to be studied include: the study of matter and energy, measurement, atomic structure, chemical formulas & reactions, chemical bonding, states of matter, thermochemistry, and organic chemistry.

Who should take Honors Chemistry?

Honors Chemistry is typically recommended for students interested in pursuing a science career or science-related field of study.  However, any student wishing to develop problem-solving and analytical reading and writing skills should also take this course.  It is not a typical course.  Students will be asked to develop their problem solving skills by demonstrating the scientific method on a daily basis.  Students in this class should possess superior reading, mathematical and critical thinking skills and be willing to accept the challenge of academic rigor, including out-of-class research and assignments.

How is the material presented?

A variety of instructional techniques are utilized in this course.  Laboratory and hands-on experiences are the major component of this class.  As this is a college-preparatory course, students will be taught how to learn independently and through group interaction.     Each of the topics covered in Chemistry includes a pre-test of material to be studied, several in-class and homework assignments, both formal and informal laboratory experiments, research projects, multiple quizzes, and a final evaluation at the end of the unit.  Other assignments and enrichment work will be assigned as well.

*Note:  The Honors Chemistry course is designed to cover material at a faster pace than the general level.  Students will also be expected to learn some topics independently and with minimal teacher assistance.
