Grading/Assessment

Grades will be based on tests, quizzes, in-class work, homework, laboratory work, and projects.   Each assignment will be assigned a point value and category.  The categories will be weighed as follows:

Tests/Quizzes:                                     40%

Classwork/Homework:                       30%

Laboratory Experiments:                    30%

Test/Quizzes:  Short quizzes over a particular section will be given at least once a week.  Tests will cover the entire unit studied. Test scores will be doubled.  Students will know in advance of all tests/quizzes.

Classwork/Homework: It is expected that all students complete each and every assignment.  Classwork includes individual and group work/activities, and occasional pop quizzes.  Homework will be assigned daily and is to be completed in the student’s notebook unless otherwise directed.  Assessments will be given to determine completeness of homework.

Laboratory Experiments:  It is expected that all students complete laboratory activities and quizzes.  This includes both formal and informal lab reports.  Safety procedures will be enforced.  See separate handout on laboratory procedures.

Note:  A variety of assessment strategies are used in this class.  They include, but are not limited to, multiple-choice, problem solving, fill-in, short answer, essay, matching, standard memorization, written and word-processed assignments, reports, tests, and research.  Performance-based assessments are also used.

The letter grading scale will be the same outlined in your parent/student handbook.

Note:  Extra credit is not usually offered in chemistry.  If there were a situation in which extra credit would be offered, it would be available for all students.  No extra credit will be offered to individual students.
