In the event of a SERIOUS accident/injury or emergency in the laboratory, the following procedures should be followed to prevent further injury:

1.     Shout “Code One” to alert staff and students that an accident has occurred.

2.     Students not involved in the accident should do the following:

a.      Close all containers

b.     Shut off the gas and air valves

c.      Shut off and unplug any electrical device

d.     Push white button to alert front office of the emergency

e.      Evacuate using the fire drill route

f.       Listen for further instructions

 3.     While students not involved in the accident are completing the above, the teacher will immediately report to the site of the accident and take whatever measures are necessary to assist student (s) involved and notify the front office of the accident.

***Note***  these procedures are to be used for SERIOUS accidents/injuries only.  Accidents such as spillage or equipment breakage should just be reported to the instructor.  Students will be educated in the use of all safety equipment (fire blanket, safety shower, eye wash, fire extinguisher, etc.) and may need to use this equipment in the event of an emergency.
