Welcome to future Service-Learning Schools
SITES would like to wish good luck and good wishes to our friends developing new service-learning opportunities at: Delaware City Schools, Medina High School, Sebring Local Schools, Marion L. Steele High School (Amherst) and Lorain County Academy (Oberlin).
Outreach Week Delivers Service and Learning!
The annual SITES intense service-learning excursions were a great success! We had two trips - one in the Greater Cleveland Area and one in Washington and Morgan Counties in Southeastern Ohio. We partnered with WMCAP and friends in Marietta and a host of non-profit organizations in Cuyahoga County. We are grateful to our chaperones, teachers, community leaders, and partners for making the trips memorable and meaningful.
Be the Pebble: Creating a Ripple Effect with Service-Learning
North Olmsted, Ohio - March 4th. The second annual service-learning professional development workshop was held at the Rocky River Nature Center. Educators from different parts of Ohio engaged in service-learning training and project development. Great thanks go to Dr. Richard Bradley and to the staff at the nature center. Thank you to Learn and Serve America for funding the entire day.
Sowing the Seeds of Service
Cleveland - The Youth Philanthropy and Service program at the Mandel Center of CWRU held its annual workshop on February 10th. The SITES instructors and two students, Jen and Cara presented a session on empowering students. Students and faculty alike were impressed with the conference and inspired by Oona Chatterjee, the keynote speaker who was "skyped in" due to adverse weather conditions in New York City. Just a reminder to those in attendance - SITES is available to help set up school service-learning projects - call us!

The Mandel Center for Non-Profit Organization's Youth Philanthropy and Service program is sponsoring its annual workshop on February 10, 2010. We encourage schools to participate in this great conference in Cleveland. Click here for details.
Thank You, Salvation Army
Our community is grateful for our our partner, the Cleveland Salvation Army, for our recent activities: The Radiothon and Coats for Kids Distribution Day. Together we make a difference. On December 17th, the students were part of a massive project serving 2600 families and 7000 children in Greater Cleveland.
Thank You, Veterans
On behalf of North Olmsted High School, we salute the brave men and women who have served our nation in times of war. On November 5th, dozens of combat veterans and their guests were treated to a homemade breakfast, a powerful recognition ceremony, and a chance to interact with 9th and 10th grade history students. Thank you to all of our supporters and honored guests.
Make a Difference Day
A whole new and exciting SITES Program is reaching out to all of North Olmsted on October 23-24 and beyond. Read all about it on the North Olmsted City Schools Website.
Seniorfest Success
Wednesday, October 14th was a grand day for North Olmsted. The 18th Annual Seniorfest Luncheon and Dance was held at Springvale Ballroom with over 340 guests, students, moms, civic leaders, and educators in attendance.
Ohio Youth Challenge Day
75 Students - 25 Teachers - 20 Schools - The State House, Columbus, Ohio
Thanks go out to all participants in the October 6-7 Learn and Serve
Ohio Youth Challenge Day. This second annual event gathered students
and teachers from all over Ohio to engage in kick off activities
related to service and service-learning. SITES was a proud sponsor
of the two literacy projects, Story Book Collaboration and Cleveland
Sight Center Puppet Production. Students created a story book
anthology complete with illustrations and lesson suggestions using
Google document technology and multi-media materials. The books will
be published in North Olmsted and sent to participating school
districts to spark service-learning projects in elementary
classrooms. The puppet manipulatives will be utilized in the
preschool for the visually impaired. The story elements are tactile
and will be used with a felt board. Students also cleaned up the
State House grounds despite heavy winds and bracing temperatures.
LEADERSHIP CAMP SUCCESS
The class of 2010 kicked off its official first major event last weekend at Firelands Scout Reservation and Rocky River Nature Center. The SITES students and volunteers gathered for training, service, leadership development, and planning over a two-day event. Their service project included clearing brush from the west dam of the camp lake in order to preserve the pond ecosystem. Everyone joined in the Bear relay obstacle course, initiative games, a home-cooked dinner, and much more. The unifying of the program was palpable. Guest speakers this year were Mrs. Julie McCabe, former SITES teacher and now Medina High School associate principal and Ms. Kim Wenger, former SITES student and current North Olmsted City Planner. Students designed and practiced lessons and service-learning rallies for Project Storybook and Make a Difference Day. Thanks go out to all the community leaders, parents, families, and scout volunteers who gave of their time and resources to make Leadership Camp 2009 a success!
More new partners:
The SITES Program is happy to announce new partnerships with Marc's and Giant Eagle of North Olmsted as we all embark on the first Make a Difference Day North Olmsted on October 23 and 24. This new project will educate young students (K-8) about preservation of natural resources, distribute reusable grocery bags to 3000 families in the city, and donate food and non-perishables to the community food pantry. Look for more information in the next few days. SITES is proud to be working with the City Planner, NOCS Education Foundation and the Cuyahoga Solid Waste Management District, all of which are contributing to this project.
New Professional Partnerships
SITES will be part of the National Youth Leadership Council's Generator School Network out of St. Paul, Minnesota. Additionally, the program has been chosen to take a leadership role in the new Service-Learning Resource and Development Center at Cleveland State University. As a part of these professional organizations, the instructors will develop new service-learning initiatives and continue providing training and leadership to other school districts throughout the state and nation.
OUTREACH WEEK SUCCESS!
Every student in the program reached out to others in a new way in rural, urban, and suburban Ohio. 60 students, parents, and faculty traveled to Southeastern Ohio working with Washington Morgan Community Action Programs and other agencies to allow students to partner with local people doing service. 40 students, faculty, parents, and community leaders were based in the Greater Cleveland partnering with non-profit organizations to provide care and good labor to our neighbors. Both groups experienced enrichment learning along with their service ventures. Thank you to all our partners and new friends in service!
