File and Folder Security
Some HYDRA users have asked about security of the files and folders they create/use. Here is the general rule from
MASTERING WINDOWS NT SERVER 4. I think it is a good explanation.
"When you copy or create a file to a directory, the newly created file or copy takes on the permissions of the directory that it's in. If you move a file, then it takes its permissions with it."
Example: I create a file/folder called KidsPictures within my personal folder. My personal folder has security permissions to only allow LHEALAN access. This means LHEALAN is the only user who can get to KidsPictures. Another folder called PUBLICATIONS allows 3 users and LHEALAN access. If I
copy KidsPictures into PUBLICATIONS, the 3 users and LHEALAN will be able to access it. If I
move KidsPictures to PUBLICATIONS, LHEALAN will be the only user able to access KidsPictures.
Most of us like to drag and drop. If you drag a file to a folder on the same disk, it will be moved. If you drag it to a folder on another disk, it will be copied.
