The Republic of Ecuador, a country of 363,593 (July
2005) is divided into four regions: the coast, the highlands, the oriente, or
the Amazon region, and the Galapagos Islands. Each of the first three are
further divided into northern, central and southern regions. The flag is composed of a wide yellow stripe and smaller blue and red stripes. The yellow represents the Federation of Greater Colombia to which Ecuador belonged before its independence in 1822. The blue represents ins independence from Spain and the red represents courage. The coat of arms is topped by the condor who is protecting the country. Also represented is Mt. Chimborazo, the highest peak in the Andes which gave rise to the River Guayas which travels to the Pacific coast. A steamboat rides on the Guayas. It represents the first steamboat in Ecuador and in South America. The sun represents a symbol important to the ancient Incas. |
