Are Hormones Making Us Shorter?

Hormones and Height

  • Hormones and Height! Kate Loeser and Samantha Balfe welcome you to our website on hormones in our food and the effects they have on our height.
  • Added hormones are becoming more and more of a health concern as medical research is finding they alter our height, induce earlier puberty, and increase our risk of getting serious illnesses like cancer.
  • The main focus of our study is to answer our question:  Are hormones making teens shorter?
  • For this study, we got a random sample from the students in North Olmsted High School.  We used a random number generator to obtain our random sample.  We then went to their 6/7th period classrooms to measure their heights in inches, using a measuring tape.
  • We went online and used different search engines to find the average heights of people during the years 1948-1950.  We then compared that average height to the average height of the data we collected.
  • We entered our data into mini-tab and did a basic statistics test to get the descriptive statistics.  We also created a boxplot of height in inches and a summary graph for their height in inches.
  • We failed to reject the null hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance since our p-value was greater than alpha.  Therefore, we do not have sufficient evidence to say that people are now shorter than 58 to 60 years ago.
