Notes from Mrs. Caso

This chapter on solving equations will build to a 5-step process for solving equations and then apply that process to various types problem solving situations. I suggest that you create an index card listing the 5 steps on one side and an example on the other. Then use it as a bookmarker in your text book. Every time you can't remember the steps, refer to the card. Once you've used it enough times, you won't have to look at it anymore. It's like calling the same phone number over and over. After enough calls you don't have to look it up again.

1. Distribute to remove parentheses on both sides of the equation.
2. Combine like terms on each side of the equation.
3. Get the variable (to be solved for) on one side of the equal sign.
4. Eliminate the constant term to the other side of the equation by adding or subtracting.
5. Eliminate the coefficient of the variable by multiplying or dividing.

• 3.6 - Create a word problem that involves decimal values. Then write an equation to model the problem. Explain why decimals are important in our society.
